When learning any new sport, the first lesson usually consits of the basics. The first step is learning the five elements of a good set-up. Before you swing the golf club, you should understand that there are five elements in the set-up that need to be respected. They help you to play to your potential, making your golf swing easier and the game more fun. Knowing these elements and practicing certain drills will help you to focus and make the set-up position second nature to you, leading to a more productive golf swing.
Many golf professionals and top amateurs often return to the basic fundamentals to sharpen and to groove their game. Practicing the fundamentals correctly is essential to playing to your potential. Here are the five elements to a good set up:
As a teacher, I want my students to remember the 5 elements to a good set-up. Learn and remember the basics. If I ask you what the 5 elements to a good set-up are, you should know the answer. After you learn them, it will take seconds to check these elements before making your shot. Learn them, and you will be on your way to playing to your potential.
1. Alignment 2. Foot Position (Stance) 3. Ball Position 4. Posture 5. The Grip
Let's define these 5 elements:
1. Alignment :
Alignment is aiming YOUR club and body towards YOUR target. If your alignment is incorrect, the best swing in the world will not get the ball to your target.
2. Foot Position (Stance):
YOUR stance or how to place your feet are essential to good weight transfer. Hitting the ball far requires two things: good weight transfer and clubhead speed. Placing your feet in the right manner, will promote good weight transfer and a better golf swing.
3. Ball Position: Where should you place the ball in relation to your feet?
4. Posture:
The most neglected aspect of the golf swing is the posture. This aspect can help you to be consistant in your shot making. Like a machine, the golfer needs to develop a repeating swing in order to obtain the desired results consistantly. If the golfer can adopt a proper position where the head, spine, hips, legs and arms are always positioned correctly during the swing, he/she will be able to accelerate the learning process. By changing the angle of your back or knees, you will create inconsistant results. We'll show you how to cement your body with educational drills and build a strong posture which will help you get the desired results from your golf swing.
5. The Grip: Finally, how to place your hands on the club. Where are the pressure points? Does the grip affect the direction of your shots? The grip is the only link from body to club. Let's learn how to place our hands correctly on the club. How tight should we hold the club and why is it important to keep constant pressure during the entire swing? There are some variations to holding the club. The golfer can choose the one he/she prefers but from these preferences, similar aspects of holding the club remain the same. So before you hit your next golf shot, remember to look at YOUR set-up: Check your alignment, foot position(stance), ball position, posture and grip.
Again:
1. Alignment 2. Foot Position (Stance) 3. Ball Position 4. Posture 5. The Grip
